Virasat-2010: Evening of Melody


As a part of the Virasat Series of Concerts 2010, Spicmacay's Subchapter at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore is excited to host the Hindustani Classical Maestro, Pandit Ajay Pohankar.

Ajayji was a child prodigy and was introduced to Classical music scene by none other than Ustad Amir khan saheb in 1958 at the age of 10 at the Calcutta music conference. He has been singing the Kirana, Patiala and Gwalior gharana gayakis and was trained by his mother, musicologist Dr Susheela Pohankar. Pandit Ajay Pohankar has been in the Indian music scene since last 50 years now, has done innumerable concerts in India and all over the world and has been a trendsetter in his own right. His singing impresses primarily for its aesthetic beauty and then for its impeccable technique. His voice has reached and touched the hearts of millions of listeners around the world.

He will be accompanied by Pandit Ravindra Yavagal and Shri Gurumurthy Vaidya on the tabla and Shri Vyasmurti Katti on the Harmonium.

Pt. Ravindra Yavagal was initiated into music by his father Late Sri.Ramachandra Yavagal at the age of four. Considered to be a child prodigy, Pt. Ravindra Yavagal gave his first solo performance at the age of ten at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Music Festival at Kundagol. He is an A “TOP RANKING” artiste of All India Radio. A “POST GRADUATE” in music from Indira Kala Vishvavidyalaya-Khairagarh (M.P), he is one of the most sought after tabla players of the country today and has been able to enthrall the audience through his skillful fingering techniques and creative style which is a result of rigorous training and sincere riyaz.

Shri Gurumurthy Vidya, presently under the tutelage of Pt. Ravindra Yavagal has performed in many programmes of AIR & Doordarshan. He has also accompanied many well known artists like Smt Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, Dr. N Rajam, Pt. Brijbhushan Kabra and has also performed in many prestigious festivals like Sawai Gandharva Festival Pune, Pt. Taranath Foundation, Kalamandalam, Kerala.

Shri. Vyasmurti Katti was initiated into music at a very young age by his sisters. He then trained in harmonium under the late Pt. Ramacharya Bagewadi of Solapur. Shri. Katti has given harmonium solo concerts and accompanied eminent artists. His lucid playing style and 'following' technique has won the appreciation of both artistes and music connoisseurs alike.

With such a star-studded combination, Virasat 2010 has got off to a remarkable start and this concert in particular promises to be a confluence of great minds. This is an essential showcase of pristine hindustani music for any Indian Classical music fan and the Spicmacay subchapter at IIM,Bangalore extends its warm welcome to all music lovers to come and be a part of this special experience.
